The WP Theme Experiment

By James Dalman · Comments (6)
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

The last two years I’ve had a lot of people ask me about which premium WordPress themes are the best choice for their projects and exactly how easy they are to learn and use.  These questions are usually subjective based on a person’s knowledge, skill set, what they’ve heard from others, or what their desired outcome is supposed to be.  Giving a first place award for “Best in Show” to a premium WP theme company is extremely difficult because of these variables.  Regardless, I am going to conduct a little experiment.

The Do It Yourself (DYI) group is a huge market.  There are many of us who would rather dig in and learn how to use or customize  premium WP themes ourselves in addition to a group of us who will use these products to build a business for clients.  My experiment is going to be based on these groups and I am going to look at how well the themes stack up in the following areas:

  • Ease of use for a beginner to intermediate user
  • Documentation or How to Videos
  • Support for the theme
  • Visual and graphical appearance “out of the box”
  • Level of customization or CSS knowledge required to change base design
  • User-friendliness for designers, developers, or neither

My end goal is to provide an accurate review and grade for each theme I test, based on how well an entry-level to intermediate level person might use that product to build a site and make money with that product.  The following premium themes or frameworks are what I consider the industry leaders and ones I would like to use for this experiment.

Themes or frameworks I currently have:

  • iThemes Builder
  • Headway
  • Startbox

Themes or frameworks I would like to take for a test drive:

  • StudioPress
  • Press 75
  • Woo Themes
  • Thesis

I am hopeful that I will be able to test all of these premium themes and start providing individual reviews by August 18th, with a complete report ready September 1st.  If you are a theme company that would like to donate or provide your theme for a BETA test experiment please let me know ASAP.  I will limit the entries to eight (8) companies and will cut off any new entries August 11, 2010.

Finally, I will say that all reviews will be completely objective and not based on my involvement with Startbox or my previous employment with iThemes. Just in case you were wondering.

Does Size Really Matter For Business?

By James Dalman · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Have you ever wondered if the size of your business really mattered?

Many entrepreneurs believe that success comes from how big their business grows or how many clients they can close on.  Bloggers determine that having a larger audience or comment base is better and hardcore Twitter lovers place an extreme value on how many followers they have.  If bigger is better, then why do so many big businesses fail?

Think about Starbucks.

They are hurting right now and have been closing stores because they grew way too fast.  The placement of Starbucks stores in about any location or venue they could place it damaged the unique experience people loved.  Now they are trying to regain market share by becoming small again and by inventing “local coffee shops” that are forced and inauthentic.  It’s an epic failure.   The same thing happened with Krispy Kreme and Orange County Choppers.  Something unique is created, the demand is raised to higher levels, and then mass production destroys the uniqueness … and profits.

Seth Godin preaches about how scarcity generates value.  This is not a new concept but it is absolutely true.  The less likely you can get something, the more it is worth.

I like love this mindset for business!  Cory Miller and I had a conversation about this while at WordCamp Boston.  He asked if I thought highly popular “mom and pop” shops should grow to meet the demand of new customers or stay small.  I believe that when you start getting bigger and making more of your services or products available to a wide range of audiences, that the short term profits you might earn now, will hurt the life of your business later. I’ve seen entrepreneurs who keep their businesses small or limited, thrive year after year.   Eischen’s Bar in Okarche, Oklahoma is well known for their fried chicken.  It’s a small bar that is packed out every weekend and lunch day (regardless of reviews going either way) and much of the allure is because they’ve decided to keep the special “whole in wall” experience to one location and a limited menu.  Other businesses that use similar strategies are In-N-Out Burgers and Tom Bihn Bags.

My point is that you don’t have to have a large client list, following, or readership to be a successful brand or business.  Sometimes the best thing you can do is stay small and focused, or just create a really cool or unique experience.  If you are something remarkable and worth talking about you won’t have to worry about being a huge success.

Eat Your Own Dog Food

My website is undergoing construction again.  I know, change as usual — but this time it’s different.

I believe that a company or business professional who creates and sells a “crown jewel” product should use it.  Recently we released our Builder Theme from iThemes and I felt that it would be best to recreate my website using this awesome theme … and to showcase the creative and functional ability you can achieve with Builder.

Over the next few weeks you will see the transformation taking place and I’m going to do my best to document the journey and the process so designers and developers can have a “behind the scenes” look into using Builder for their own sites or clients needs.

So please check back to view the progress or subscribe to my RSS feed for the latest updates.  Thanks!

Blogging Your Way to Career Success: Free Workshop

By James Dalman · Comments (3)
Friday, October 23rd, 2009

On October 26th, Cory Miller will offer a free workshop on Blogging Your Way to Career Success and  I think everyone should take the opportunity to learn from him and here’s why…

Cory has done some incredible things through blogging such as breaking the Technorati Top 100, building a church communications site in the Top 100 Christian Sites, and built a great business called iThemes through this platform of media.  I met Miller through blogging which led to my opportunity to be co-founder of WebDesign.com and it has opened many doors for myself personally including speaking and writing.

In this economy you must begin thinking about building brand you and blogging for a successful future.  If you want to be left behind, then ignore the platforms such as blogging, Twitter, and FaceBook – but if you want to thrive, then getting the knowledge to use these tools is absolutely mandatory!  It is what Gary Vaynerchuk calls “CRUSH IT!”

So DON’T WAIT to get signed up for this FREE WORKSHOP ON BLOGGING YOUR WAY TO CAREER SUCCESS – SPACE IS LIMITED.
