Trust is a hard issue for me today.
I’ve been screwed over in business deals and had people rip-off my designs. I’ve worked hard to help others get what they want and then been stabbed in the back. Chances are you have too.
There used to be a day where a man could look into the eyes of another man and shake hands knowing that a deal was firm. You could count on their word being as valuable as gold. But you can’t anymore. You have to sit down and clarify every conversation or track the details. You have to get lawyers involved to make sure there is a hundred page document that binds any arrangement. Anything said until the paper is signed is all bullshit.
I don’t want it this way but people have a habit of only doing what’s in their best interest – bosses, coworkers, partners, and clients. It’s natural and I understand – but I believe that we only truly win when our personal interest is set aside for the interest of all the people involved. It’s great to have people in business that says “we” instead of individuals that say “me”, and it is a good feeling to know that people have your back.
Advice:
Those who are not trustworthy or give you red flags – get rid of them immediately. They will always be a cancer. Don’t keep clients or workers who cannot honor their word. If your boss keeps giving you the shaft, find another job or career. Surround yourself with people you can rely on, and that in your gut, you believe in.
If you are one of those people who only see through a lens of what is in it for you or take advantage of the company you work with or your clients…you will reap what you sow. Man up and do the right honorable thing. Build your reputation instead of tearing it down!
