There are times in our business where we are so beat up and tired that we want to give up. It could be the bills are stacking up, people are declining your offer, you pushed out a botched product, or you are trying like hell to get your first breakthrough.
DON’T GIVE UP UNLESS YOUR BUSINESS IS DEAD
Yes, there ARE times when it’s time to throw in the towel but many people quit before they get through the threshold. Business is tough! If it were easy, everyone would be running their own show. Maybe you haven’t had the results you have hoped for but maybe it’s not the business but the tactic or the plan. It could be something else. Look at all the angles and don’t be afraid to change directions.
Ten years ago I wanted to stop designing. People kept jerking me around and wasting my time trying to get a bargain. I wasn’t supporting my family because I didn’t have the balls to stand up for myself and charge the right fees for my talents and skills…skills that companies were paying ad agencies millions of dollars for. Before I threw in the towel I changed my approach. I looked for clients who understood and knew the value of my work. I focused on those 20% who were willing to invest in the best. And it completely turned things around.
Suddenly I was making money. I started developing a solid reputation and my services were now in demand. I would have never achieved this if I had quit before I pushed through that threshold!
Let me ask this. Are you ready to quit? If your business isn’t really ‘dead’ then give it another push or two. You might be on the verge of achieving that breakthrough.
