There are certain aspects in business that excite us and others that we would rather not do – especially in when it comes to services.  Sometimes we feel that we must take on a project due to money, obligation, or pressure.  My next small business tip is this:

LEARN TO SAY “NO!”

Don’t accept projects that you don’t want to do.  Don’t settle for less money than you deserve.  Don’t compromise on your work to make a client happy just for the sake of making them happy.

It’s difficult for some people to say no.  I had a lot of trouble with this in the very beginning of my business career, and at times, still struggle with turning down requests for work I am not interested in.  The problem is that when we say “yes” and go against our instincts, we end up regretting our decision and it results in crappy work or products, stress, disdain towards the client, health issues, unhappiness, lack of motivation, and a bunch of other negative outcomes which we should not deal with.

It is OK for you to politely and firmly reject an offer or project.  It will also give you credibility and build your reputation by being firm and honest.  Have a product or project you have no interest in?  Get it off your plate today and say no!
