Yesterday I had a conversation with a church leader who is searching for a company to brand and market their ministry. He has looked around at different design companies and wanted to know what a ‘good price’ is to pay for a logo. Sometimes my question is “what do you want to spend on a logo?” The reason I ask this is because if you value a logo (or branding) then you are willing and are planning to invest more, but if having a logo is not a value or necessity, then I can’t convince you that $1500 for a custom logo is worth it. What you could pay and what you will pay is based on your worldview (including being broke or having a fat wallet).

If you’re view is that a logo would be nice and needed, but you don’t have any money – then there are many options like LogoWorks, Pixel Logo, and LogoMaid. These companies specialize in logos for around $299.00. They have some nice samples and a variety of packages but I will say that I have heard many people who have walked away in frustration or disappointment with these types of quick and cheap logo factories.

On the other hand, if you believe that you get what you pay for or want to go with a “notable design company” then you could look at investing $1,500 – $3,000 for a custom logo. This is not an unreasonable fee and these designers have to make a living too, not to mention the years of training they have put in. Some firms specialize in logo and identity development so they will charge a little more but their rates will be significantly lower than an ad agency who can charge $10,000 and upwards.

The two cents: Do you prefer or think that Starbucks is better than Folgers? This will have some bearing on what you should pay for a logo. If you can spend $1,500 , get what you want, and walk away smiling…then that’s your price. If it’s spending $299, getting what you want, and walk away smiling…then that’s your price.

And what am I drinking? Starbuck’s Komodo Dragon. That’s my worldview!
