I got Seth Godin’s latest book Small is the New Big for Christmas and one thing I really like about it is that it’s not another “how-to” book full of studies and boring strategies. What Seth does is engage your mind, throw out some random rants and riffs, and then lets you decide what to think or do with the information. Don’t get me wrong, there are some suggestions he provides but overall this will challenge the reader to think – and that’s a great process for any church, business, and non-profit.
You’ll have to read the book to get the DL on this riff but he mentions how churches could be more effective by staying small (and I apologize I didn’t bookmark the page but I’ll add that later) with an example that a pastor could build better relationships or make more visits to people in the hospital if the church was smaller. What a concept! How come we have to have “The Fastest Growing Churches in the U.S.” or “Most Influential Churches” lists? Why not have “The Most Effective Churches” or “Small Churches with Big Hearts”?
Maybe we should place an emphasis on building smaller, healthier, and reproducing churches. Big churches aren’t bad – but neither are the small ones. Just food for thought.
