Who are you? Who are you really?
I want to encourage those pastor’s who are planting a church to be themselves and not be a “me-too” pastor or church. Don’t be a poser and be someone who you aren’t. You know what I mean. I would love to own and ride a Harley or a chopper. I have the assortment of HD merchandise…t-shirts, coffee mugs, even die-cast motorcycles – but I don’t actually have a Fat Boy. I am a poser and a wannabe.
There are a lot of church planting pastors who are trying to be like Mark Driscoll, Craig Groeschel, Andy Stanley, or Ed Young. Don’t do that! Don’t try and build a church like theirs. Be yourself and build your own vision. It’s OK to take ideas and mix up something that will be your own. Don’t be a poser. This also applies to painting a picture of what your church is and what you might want your church to be like. Paint the picture accurately because people will see through the fluff anyways.
Who you are is part of branding. And if you are imitating someone else all you are doing is building their brand. Go and build your own.
