“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price has been forgotten”.
A friend of mine told me this quote about a year ago as we were discussing how some people just look at the bottom line when purchasing products or services. Now I realize that sometimes you just don’t have a choice between spam and sirloin…sometimes we are flat out broke and other times we may have an abundance. But there are times we DO have a choice and we should choose wisely – not just based on how much it cost.
For example:
I’ve had dozens of discussions with church planters or pastors that needed a logo who found mycheapandquicklogos.com or everyonehasitlogos.com on the Internet. They also found some great designers as well but their final decision came down to price. Joe Designer charges over a thousand dollars for a few ideas and mylogosucks.com charges $199.00 for unlimited ideas and revisions. What a great deal right? WRONG! Every one of those pastors I talked with had a frustrating and unsuccessful outcome. Why? Because you get what you pay for.
It’s not the pastor’s fault for trying to be a good steward of his financial resources or that the companies they hired were in it for a quick buck. But the sweet taste of low price ended up in bitter disgust. They still ended up going to Joe Designer after they threw away significant time and their money.
I could go on and on, but I’ll sum this up. Don’t base your decisions just on pricing. Consider the total package. Excellence and cheap don’t work together. If you want the best, invest in it because that’s what it will be – an investment. If cheap is your main concern, then realize that most times you get what you pay for and it could leave a very bitter taste in your mouth. Don’t ask how much does it cost and look at the small picture…ask how much is it worth and look at the bigger picture.
